Baumüller direct drive technology
Nuremberg. Today’s machine concepts face stringent
requirements. In addition to requirements for increased productivity
and availability and better energy efficiency, cost reductions
are also expected. However, these goals are not met in the
case of maintenance-intensive gearboxes and low-efficiency
standard motors or hydraulic systems. Rather, direct drive
solutions are increasingly overtaking conventional gearbox-motor
combinations.
Baumüller has been a major player on the direct drive
technology market since 1991. The increasing use of electric
direct drives in modern production facilities has been driven
forward by customer requirements for increased productivity
and flexibility, improved options for process control, and
increased machine availability and longer service lives.
Less maintenance expense due to direct drive technology
Compared to conventional motor-gearbox combinations, direct
drives operate without some high-maintenance transmission
components, such as belts and toothed gears. This means that
time-consuming and costly maintenance intervals are kept to
a minimum, thus significantly increasing equipment availability.
Furthermore, the elimination of the gearbox has given rise
to a drive that is free from backlash, better smooth running
characteristics (thanks to improved control quality), and
a reduction in service and maintenance requirements. Fluctuations
in operating parameters can be taken into account and compensated
in the controller by means of software programs. As a result,
Baumüller direct drive technology allows you to increase
your product quality and reduce rejects.
Cost and energy efficiencies
More significant are the energy cost benefits of switching
from geared motor solutions to direct drives. The lack of
wear-prone mechanical components in the drive significantly
reduces friction losses in the system, thus improving the
energy balance – a decisive factor in times of rising
fuel prices.
The DST high torque motors developed by Baumüller fulfill
these requirements for energy consumption. When used as direct
drives, they exhibit very high efficiency at the operating
point. Thus, they enable an extremely efficient energy conversion
since additional losses due to mechanical transmission elements
are avoided. This efficiency is even higher under partial
load, resulting in optimized energy consumption over the entire
operating range.
More compact and quieter than geared motors
Their compact design, in particular, is proving to be especially
advantageous for machinery manufacturers. In spite of their
small size, Baumüller high torque motors exhibit the
same performance as geared motors. They can be integrated
into existing machine concepts and arranged side by side without
difficulty. This increases the power density of the machine
because less packaging space is required and less production
area is utilized.
The high-torque motors are also characterized by a high overload
capability and reduced noise emissions. Featuring degree of
protection IP54, the motor can even be used successfully in
harsh industrial environments.
