Drive Intelligence: energy monitoring

Baumüller presents its innovative “Smart Energy Monitoring” function at SPS 2023 in Nuremberg. With this function, machine builders can analyze energy consumption directly in the drive, without the use of external hardware.

As an expert in drive-integrated intelligence, Baumüller makes it possible to monitor energy consumption per cycle directly in the drive. Since no external sensors are necessary, machine builders save both space and costs for wiring and hardware.

The data collected not only serves to analyze energy consumption, but also forms the basis for increasing efficiency, which means that energy consumption can be reduced in a targeted manner. In addition, this information enables to detect wear and tear to prevent machine downtimes. This means that machine manufacturers and operators benefit twice.

The software is installed directly on the servo controller. The intelligent drive records the energy consumption directly. This saves additional costs for external sensors and reduces the amount of wiring.

With its software function for intelligent energy monitoring, Baumüller enables the transparent recording of the energy consumption of individual production orders. Based on a reference value, consumption can then be optimized in the second step. The reference measurement also serves as a starting value to detect energy deteriorations in the production process and to set warning or error thresholds.

With the Smart Energy Monitoring software solution from Baumüller, the energy consumption of each individual axis per cycle can be determined and optimized.

The functions

The Smart Energy Monitoring software function is integrated into the softdrivePLC of the Baumüller converter and can be operated via a manufacturer-independent control system. This means that the energy measurement is carried out autonomously and in a fast controller cycle in the Baumüller servo drives.

In the higher-level PLC, a software module analyzes the transmitted measured values and then calculates, among other things, the actual energy consumption per cycle for each axis and across all axes. These values are then displayed by the machine visualization. Alternatively, the results can also be transmitted via open IoT interfaces, such as OPC UA, and displayed on a dashboard. A higher-level Baumüller control system processes the current energy values from the converters, creates a reference This enables a comparison of subsequent cycles based on defined threshold values.

The benefits

Machine builders and machine operators benefit equally from the drive-integrated Smart Energy Monitoring function. It enables the optimization of energy use in the machine and thus reduces energy costs during operation. In addition, it allows maintenance work to be planned more efficiently and conducted more cost-effectively, as mechanical wear is automatically detected. Displaying the energy consumption per piece makes it easier to calculate costs and determine the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF).

In addition to the Smart Energy Monitoring function, Baumüller also offers other drive-integrated software packages such as condition monitoring or the motion package for cross cutter functions. Baumüller offers software engineering as a service for the implementation and adaptation of all software packages to the challenges of the individual application. Thus, proven drive expertise and established industry experience go hand in hand.
